This post is dedicated to my self proclaimed biggest fan Guttybear.
Guttybear as you know, we are all born into a certain set of circumstances. We have no say in these circumstances at the outset and sometimes that can hurt us. Sometimes the people around us can be cruel. Sometimes our suffering seems endless and pointless and our lives seem bound to be futile and unpleasant. And yet somehow there are still countless tales of people rising above their oppression to become something amazing, in spite of or perhaps because of what’s happened to them.
Take Iqbal Masih for instance. He was sold into legalized slavery by his parents when he was 4 and worked 14 hours a day, 7 days a week with no hope of freedom until he was 10. Then he escaped. Corrupt cops recaptured him and returned him to his owners. He was taught not to trust anyone. And yet he managed to escape again and this time he got away. He became an activist. He then helped free 3000 similarly indentured children before he was shot fatally by someone who didn’t like the change he was creating. The boy was a hero.
He was a hero who didn’t let his circumstances limit him and used his adversity as strength in order to prevent others from suffering as he did. He was born into awful circumstances but he took control of his life and who he was in order to help others. He lived for something bigger than himself and died willingly for that freedom. He felt something we’ve never felt, and lived as we’ve never lived. We’ve both suffered Guttybear, we’ve had unfair circumstances forced onto us and been made to suffer accordingly. But we are born liberated from any obligation to anyone except ourselves and those we choose to help. We are defined by our actions, not by our intentions and if we fail to act we fail to grow.
Guttybear you wanted a blog post and here it is. Don’t stagnate my friend, don’t allow your life to passively pass you by as you wish things could be different or that you could be different. Act, learn, improve every day and eventually you’ll realize just how powerful you’ve been this whole time.
Go write a book. Tell a story. Tell your story. People will read them. People may love them. But it won’t matter. Because if you write them with your growth as the benchmark. You will love them.
Love your life buddy, love yourself. Never judge your value by how you think others perceive you. Never fear rejection so much you give yourself no chance of acceptance or bliss. Start before you’re ready, and never look back. The world may not care if you succeed Guttybear but I do.
