Where are the wise professors dispelling their years of accumulated wisdom?
Where are the bright eyed students eager to revel in the accumulated knowledge of generations past?
What the fuck happened?
Temper your expectations my friend. University is not what you expect. The day you arrive won’t be greeted by fanfare and excitement but by the weighty bureaucratic groan of overworked support personal answering your meandering questions as you try to understand this unwieldy facility.
You won’t see fit happy students learning and growing as they pursue their dreams. You will however see glassy eyed morons trying dreadfully hard to appear intelligent as their immense cheques are cashed to fund further university acquisitions and expansions. To find further marketing campaigns designed to drag the ignorant in to 4 years of voluntary slavery.
Rest assured you will get what you pay for, but there’s no guarantee you’ll like it.
In fact you probably won’t.
But the sorry thing is you’ll endure it anyways. Because you’ve been fed lies. Because you’ve been led to understand that the ONLY way to get anywhere in this world is through a university education. “You want kids that aren’t crack addicts? An attractive wife and nice toys? Well good luck without a degree sucker!” All this from the people who got those degrees they preach about and yet have none of those things.
University is a joke. It’s a bureaucratic mess that keeps on growing. In 2008 the housing bubble burst. There were too many loans given out to people who had no way of ever repaying them. Sound familiar? How many Starbucks baristas do you know with student debt? A lot. Maybe you don’t get out much, but there’s a lot of people with exotic sounding degrees working menial jobs all around you.
Why is that? Because everyone has to go to university now. Everyone. Those stupid kids who would be lucky to man a gas pump without killing themselves. Somehow they’re in university. Somehow everyone is at university. And that leaves those with genuine intelligence and talent stuck with the bottom three quarters. Stuck in a fog of similar sounding qualifications because now there’s no way for them to differentiate themselves through extra learning. University used to be a place for higher education, not education for hire. Bullshit. Few belong at university and for the most part those that are there now don’t belong.
Don’t be like one of them. Unless you’re learning a technical skill, like a trade or a variety of engineering you don’t need to go to university. But then again you may be thinking I’m a hypocrite because I’m in university for business. But note my wording, I said NEED. By no means do I need to go to university, but its an opportunity for me to connect with other innovative people in my age group working on projects similar to mine. For me thats worth the cash.
So you could be like one of those imbecile kids who thinks they have to go “get” a higher education, and who think the moment they graduate their dream job will be thrown into their hands. You could be like me and go to university for the opportunity to grow alongside your peers. Or you could be you, and go or not go for whatever reason you find appropriate. I’ve talked about this before, but you’ve got to trust your own wisdom. Make up your mind, and stick with your decision.
So what do you want? At the very least answer that question before you hand someone a cheque for $10,000 for an experience you may not fully understand.
