Supercharge Your Memory by Applying This Technique
A strong memory is a valuable skill to have. It can improve our personal, professional and romantic lives. Memory is a skill that can be improved upon. Therefore it makes sense to take the time to work on our memories.
The Method of Loci
One easy and effective way to improve our memories is to change HOW we remember. The book “Moonwalking with Einstein” has the best method I’ve found. It’s called the Method of Loci or The Memory Palace. The user creates visualizations and uses spatial awareness to efficiently recall information. It’s most useful for remembering lists and info you can chunk.
To practice this technique first memorize the layout of a building. Then picture a number of unique areas that define this place. Think aisles in a grocery store or rooms in a building. When you encounter something you need to remember, create a visual for each item. Then commit one visual to each distinct area of the area you’ve visualized. Now when you need to remember it, you mentally walk through the area triggering each chunk by “seeing” the corresponding visual.
Memory For Everyone
Eight time Memory World Champion Dominic O’Brien uses a more complex variation of this technique. Which involves combining images. Its also used by Sherlock Holmes in the fictional books and shows about him. It has been found that the more elaborate, sexual, or weird the images are the better they’re retained. It can even be used to memorize new languages as shown by Timothy Doner in his TED talk.
To begin practicing I recommend grabbing the book for more info or just start messing around memorizing shopping lists or class notes. Whatever you have thats got small, distinct bits of unrelated info.
Good luck and happy remembering!
